Sneak Peak: FIND Food Bank’s Food Security Campus opening in September

FIND Food Bank is preparing for an exciting new chapter in the fight against hunger with the opening of its Food Security Campus this September. The much-anticipated facility will celebrate its grand opening on September 26, 2025, and marks a significant step forward in the organization’s mission to end food insecurity across the Coachella Valley and surrounding desert region.

The new Food Security Campus will feature expanded warehouse capacity, allowing FIND Food Bank to accept and store more food donations than ever before. With this growth, the organization can respond more effectively to the needs of local families, seniors, veterans, and children who rely on food assistance. More space also means a stronger ability to handle large-scale donations from growers, retailers, and community partners—ensuring nutritious food gets distributed quickly and efficiently.

Beyond warehouse expansion, the campus is designed as a hub for collaboration, innovation, and education. Community members, volunteers, and partner organizations will come together under one roof to find solutions to food insecurity, strengthen outreach programs, and empower those in need. The facility will also serve as a space to connect donors and supporters directly with the impact of their contributions.

The grand opening on September 26 promises to be a celebration of community resilience and generosity. Supporters, volunteers, and partners are invited to witness firsthand how FIND Food Bank’s new Food Security Campus will transform food access for years to come.

By increasing its capacity to accept and distribute donations, FIND Food Bank is ensuring that no one in the desert region has to face hunger alone. Stay tuned for more updates, and mark your calendars to celebrate this milestone moment with the community.

Every September, food banks across the nation raise awareness about Hunger Action Month.

Here in the Coachella Valley, FIND Food Bank partners with local organizations, distributing free food to 125,000 people monthly.

“When you just look at the numbers, and the amount of population we have here and the need for food, everybody has a collective effort to volunteer, to give, to donate, to help meet that food insecurity need,” said Linda Evans, chief strategy officer for Desert Care Network.

FIND Food Bank is part of 200 Feeding America member food banks across the nation that come together to make sure local families are getting a helping hand.

“We do this year-round, at our convention center, we do a weekly food distribution, we have been doing this for a number of years, we also support the LGTBQ center of the desert, which has a food bank and we do this every week as well,” said Jeffrey Bernstein, Mayor of Palm Springs.

Not to mention, with the food insecurity rate in the desert being over 16%, having this resource in the Coachella Valley is essential.

“We have one out of six people that are affected by food insecurity, they wonder where their next meal is coming from, FIND Food Bank distributes over 20 million of food annually every year to ensure that people have healthy nutritious meals, to not only help them just survive but to also thrive,” said Debbie Espinosa, president and CEO of FIND.

In order to raise awareness, city landmarks are lighting up “orange” for Hunger Action Day, the color signifying hunger relief. “All of our cities are lighting up in orange, our corporations are lighting up in orange in order to make sure that our community, that FIND, that the people know that they will not be left behind when it comes to knowing where their next meal is coming from,” said Espinosa.

There are a number of ways, participants can help donate/volunteer, you can find more information here.

September is Hunger Action Month, during which Indio-based FIND (Food in Need of Distribution) Food Bank will join forces with Feeding America and 200 network food banks to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of locals facing food insecurity.

Hunger remains at critical levels throughout California, the results of prolonged unemployment, record heat waves and, for many, the end of unemployment benefits. FIND is engaging with the public through fundraising and awareness events to leave no local hungry during the ongoing recovery efforts.

“Hunger Action Month does a couple of things,” said Debbie Espinosa, FIND Food Bank’s CEO. “One, it calls the attention to our larger communities about food insecurity and the effects it has on people. It also celebrates many of the people who work in the food insecurity sector for the work and service they provide. All of our agencies, our partner agencies and the local businesses that contribute and support to ensure that people know where their next meal is coming from — Hunger Action Month celebrates them and their work while making sure people are aware of the food insecurity issues that we struggle through on a daily basis as communities and as individuals.”

Feeding America’s national campaign, meanwhile, highlights the impossible choices that millions of Americans are forced to make between food and other basic needs, like housing, medical care, electricity and childcare.

“A lot of the people in our food lines or receiving food from our partner distribution agencies are people who are working but still really struggling to make ends meet because the job market and the economy have not improved to where we were pre-pandemic levels,” said Espinosa.

During the month of September, businesses, city governments and individuals across the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert can get involved in the movement by donating, volunteering, learning, and speaking up about ways to end hunger.

Local restaurants, hotels, retail stores and entertainment venues across the Coachella Valley and the High Desert showing support for FIND Food Bank’s hunger relief efforts include Ace Hotel & Swim Club, Palm Springs; Desert Wine Shop, Palm Desert; Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge, Palm Springs; Grill-A-Burger, Palm Desert; Grounded Bodyworks, Palm Springs; Kaiser Grille, Palm Desert; Kimpton Rowan Hotel, Palm Springs; Hotel Paseo, Palm Desert; Life & TimesPioneertown MotelRed Dog Saloon, PioneertownPS Underground, Palm Springs, and RD RNNR, La Quinta.

“We have contributed to FIND Food Bank as often as we can over the past several years,” said Willie Rhine, co-owner of Eight4Nine. “When Kayleen (Sullivan, FIND’s community relations coordinator) reached out to me regarding Hunger Action Month, I saw a great opportunity to participate. Sept. 1 was our sixth anniversary, so donating proceeds from the Eight4Nine cocktail was the perfect cocktail to select.”

September is National Hunger Action Month and the Coachella Valley is lighting up orange to raise awareness of food insecurity.

News Channel 3’s Caitlin Thropay met with FIND Food Bank and some of our valley’s local leaders to see how they are taking action.

“It is not acceptable to have hunger in our country,” FIND Food Bank’s President and CEO, Debbie Espinosa told News Channel 3.

It’s crucial to pay attention to the color orange this month.

“We stand in solidarity together to make sure that nobody gets left behind, especially during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Espinosa said.

Six of our desert cities are standing in solidarity lighting up orange to raise awareness of those who are hungry in our communities.

“Hunger Action Month is just another opportunity for myself and the city of La Quinta to call out the need for people to have food and be able to function especially during a pandemic like this,” Mayor of La Quinta Linda Evans told News Channel 3 during a food distribution at La Quinta High School.

Desert Hot Springs also lighting up orange for the entire month.

“It means so much to me because I see the people out here in line, they’re just the average individual that’s looking for a helping hand and there’s nothing more important than making sure you have a good meal, that you can think right and have a good quality of life and it’s just a basic necessity,” Mayor of Indio Glenn Miller told News Channel 3.

The Mayor of Cathedral City took this statistic to heart and decided to light his city up in orange.

“We’ve actually lit up our city hall orange which will be lit through the end of the month,” Mayor of Cathedral City John Aguilar told News Channel 3.

Downtown Palm Springs also went orange. The Rowan hotel embraced a new orange look supporting Hunger Action Month.

Indian Wells also lit orange raising awareness of the issue of hunger in our cities. According to FIND Food Bank, one in five people in the desert region are food insecure.

“I’m so thankful for the mayors and city councils throughout the Coachella Valley lighting up their cities in support of FIND Food Bank’s goal and mission to end hunger throughout our desert communities,” Espinosa said.
